Hi,
I have a question regarding the filling of a foreign online registration
form for the First Name, Middle Name & Last Name.
For example my name is Zalina Binti Esah, which is the first, middle & last
name.

Thank You.

Zalina ( First ) Esah ( Last ) Malaysians, generally don't have a
middle name. Say the Chinese name is Tan Ting Tong. Tan is last name,
and Ting Tong is first name.

You don't have to use the Bin when filling in the forms.

Yup.
Good enuff.

There are various different formats for names and the universally accepted
first name and last name format do not really suits everyone.

Mamat (first name) Abdullah (last name)

...

yes this should work in most cases.

when filling up immigration form when entering a foreign country, sometimes
they want you to use the full name in the malaysian passport. if there is a
bin/binti in the passport, just add it to your 1st name (with space lah).
never attach it to your 'surname'. you don't want a 'binladen', right? :-)
So if your name is Zalina binti Esah (in the passport), use Zalina binti
(1st names) Esah (last).

Can we not consider 'Ting' the middle name?

Ting would be the first name, and Tong the middle name, and Tan the last
name. However, the problem arising from filling in the form this way
is, especially if you are a foreign student going to study in the US,
then, you will be called Ting by all your friends, since Tong is your
middle name, and rarely used.

No, because Ting Tong is considered ONE on its own. Many (including
the Chinese in MY) have mistaken it as two names because of the way
it is written. What they did not realise is that it is only literally
translated/romanised from the Chinese characters, which has one
syllable per character. In China, the practise is joining the two
syllable (Tingtong) or having a hyphen in middle (Ting-tong), so that
it would not confuse the non-Chinese.

First name is your given name, your actual name. In this case, Zalina.

Middle name is also known as second name. Malays, like most other Asians,
don't have second name. So leave it blank.

Last name is your surname/family name. Since most Malays don't have one,
it's usually replaced with the part beginning with "bin ..." or "binti ...".
In this case, binti Esah is your last name. But I've seen a lot of people
omitted the bin/binti. But then it depends on the official documents that
you will provide to them (if need be) to prove yourself.

LOL.

S.H. Gan might stand for Singh Harbans Gan, but why did he put Singh first?
Normally sikhs would have it put as Harbans Singh Gan, Gan being the family
name, like the famous Adidas vendor, Harbans Singh Gill from the Gill sikh
family. Likewise, I think that famous lawyer Karpal is from Deo clan.

He he he.

mamatd .... So Gan, you better clear the air!
